Brisbane Bullion presents the 1oz Austrian Philharmonic Gold Coin (2016) by the Austrian Mint.
The 1oz Austrian Philharmonic Gold Coin was first issued in October 1989 and is Europe’s most successful investment coin. It is among the best selling gold coins in the world. Originally with a face value of 2000 Austrian schillings (from 1989-2001), since 2002 its face value is now 100 Euros. It is a Gold coin that holds the rare privilege of having been circulated in two different currencies. The Austrian Philharmonic is the only Gold coin which is denominated in Euros.
Although this coin is denominated in Euros, surprisingly, it is only legal tender in the Republic of Austria, with its weight and purity guaranteed by the Austrian Mint.
The coin was designed by Thomas Pesendorfer, the Austrian Mint’s chief engraver. For the reverse side he chose eight characteristic orchestral instruments: four violins either side of a cello in the foreground and the Viennese horn, the bassoon and the harp behind. The obverse side features the famous pipe organ from the Goldener Saal of the Viennese Musikverein, recognised throughout the world as the backdrop to the Philharmonic’s New Year concerts. Above the organ, the words “Republik Oesterreich” stand in a semi-circle. The weight and purity, date of issue and face value of the coin stand beneath the balustrade of the organ.
